Why Did Fatal Accidents Increase in 2015?

Preliminary data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that fatal accidents rose from 2014 to 2015. According to the data, there were more than 35,000 traffic-related fatalities in 2015, a 7.7% increase from 2014.

The most significant increase in fatalities was for pedestrians and bicyclists. Pedestrian fatalities increased by 10%, while bicyclist fatalities rose by 13%. Large truck crashes also increased by 4%.

The increase in fatal accidents might be related to the improving economy, leading to a rise of drivers on the road. But the NHTSA asserts that this isn’t the main issue. NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind asserts that 94% of crashes are due to human choice or error. Rosekind recommends continued efforts on improving driver behavior to reduce accidents, as well as vehicle technology that helps prevent crashes.

“It’s disheartening to see such a large increase in fatal accidents. We hope that law enforcement and community leaders learn from this information and take initiative on driver education and enforcement of speeding, distracted driving and driving under the influence,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
