Female Athletes Might Experience Concussion Symptoms Differently

New concussion research shows that females may experience concussion symptoms differently than males. Not only are high school female athletes more prone to concussions, they may also have different symptoms and longer recovery times.

Researchers at the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center say that several differences between the sexes could cause concussions to affect girls differently. For one, females are more likely to experience hormonal issues after a concussion. Additionally, their neck muscles might react differently to impact. They are also more likely than men to discuss their concussion symptoms, like headaches and depression.

Why are Female Athletes More Susceptible to Concussions?

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), high school girls have much higher rates of concussions than high school boys. In fact, during the 2014-2015 school year, girls’ soccer concussions outnumbered boys’ football concussions. Concussions are more common in girls’ soccer than any other sport, but girls’ volleyball had the most significant increase in the rate of concussions from 2005 to 2015.

Female athletes may be at a higher risk of concussions in soccer due to lack of protective gear, the emphasis on in-game contact, and headers (hitting the ball with your head).

“The study is a good reminder for athletes and parents to discuss the issue of concussions with their athletic coaches, and work to determine the best ways to reduce their risk of concussions while playing sports,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
