A flat tire caused a major single-vehicle accident on I-10 in Desert Center Friday afternoon. The crash occurred in the westbound lane just west of Box Canyon Road around 1:25 p.m. Police say a westbound Ford F-150 pickup truck sustained a flat tire, and the driver lost control. The truck then struck the center divider and overturned.

A male juvenile was ejected from the pickup truck during the crash. All three occupants of the vehicle were taken to Desert Regional Medical Center for injuries.

Police are still investigating the accident. They have not determined whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash.

If you experience a flat tire while driving, follow these 5 steps for safely dealing with your flat tire:

  1. As soon as it is safe to do so, pull over to an area where it is safe to exit your vehicle.
  2. Swap your tire out for your spare. Check out the DMV guidelines for changing a tire if you need to brush up on this important skill.
  3. If for any reason you feel changing your own tire might be unsafe, call for a tow.
  4. Bring your vehicle to an auto repair shop to have the tire repaired or to purchase a new tire.

“Blowing a tire while driving can be very frightening. If it happens to you, remain calm and pull over as soon as possible,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
