Is Your Flour Included in the General Mills Recall?

Several brands of flour are being included in a General Mills recall for potential E. coli contamination. The company is recalling batches of Gold Medal, Gold Medal Wondra and Signature Kitchens flours after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked them to E. coli O121, a strain of E. coli that can produce deadly symptoms.

The bacteria was found in 38 sick people across 20 states who consumed the flour. The CDC says about half of them fell ill after making something with the flour, and others likely ate raw dough or batter. E. coli O121 can cause serious dehydration and diarrhea. Those most at risk are the elderly, young children, and those with weakened immune systems.

General Mills is also taking the opportunity to remind consumers how to safely handle and use flour. Consumers should never eat raw dough or batter, as most bacteria potentially carried in flour is killed when it is baked, fried or boiled. Other best practices include following directions for cooking at proper temperatures, washing hands and surfaces after coming into contact with uncooked flour, and properly refrigerating products as directed.

Be sure to check your pantry for any of the potentially contaminated products, which are listed on the General Mills website.

“This bacteria can make you very sick and can even be fatal, so it’s crucial to dispose of these contaminated products immediately,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
