Ford Escape Fails Passenger Crash Test

The Ford Escape is one of the most popular small SUVs, but is it safe for passengers in a crash? Of seven small SUVs tested for passenger safety by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the Ford Escape was the only to fail.

The passenger side front crash test is a new test the Institute has begun conducting. The test propels the vehicle at 40 miles an hour and causes it to strike a barrier with the bumper on the passenger side. This mimics the impact of another vehicle or object in a collision.

When the driver’s side was tested, the Escape earned an “acceptable” rating. But the passenger side test earned a “poor” rating, as the vehicle’s cabin was crushed and the airbags did not deploy. For comparison, airbags deployed in the other vehicles tested, which included the BMW X1, Jeep Compass, Mitsubishi Outlander, Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain.

The IIHS decided to formally rate the safety of passenger sides in vehicles to ensure automakers are not neglecting safety for front-seat passengers.

“Hopefully this new test encourages automakers to prioritize passenger safety,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
