Ford is recalling 1.6 million pickup trucks following an investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The trucks include model year 2015-2018 Ford F-150 Regular Cab and SuperCrew Cab vehicles. An issue with the vehicles’ seat belt pretensioners can cause the trucks to catch fire.
The NHTSA opened an investigation after receiving five complaints that seat belt pretensioners in the pickup trucks can catch fire. According to the NHTSA, three of the five trucks mentioned in the complaints were totaled by the fires.
Why Do the Trucks Catch Fire?
Seat belt pretensioners gradually prepare seat belts to restrain vehicle occupants. The type of pretensioners used in the vehicles in question are pyrotechnic pretensioners. These devices use small explosions to tighten the seat belts during crashes. In some cases, the pretensioners can create excessive sparks, which can lead to a fire.
The recall will begin on September 24. In the meantime, Ford said owners should not stop using their seat belts.
“Seat belt pretensioners are an important safety feature of modern vehicles. Unfortunately, the defect with the vehicles in question can put drivers at risk,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
