Is Your Furniture Included in Ikea Product Recall?

Furniture maker Ikea has issued a product recall of 36 million chests and dressers in the U.S. and Canada. The recall is a result of the deaths of six children attributed to Ikea’s Malm chests or dressers tipping over.

The dressers are vulnerable to tipping over if they are not securely anchored to the wall. In 2014, two toddlers died when Malm dressers tipped over on them. As a response to the tragedies, Ikea offered free wall-mounting kits to customers and encouraged them to anchor their dressers to the wall. Then in February 2016, a 22-month-old in Minnesota was killed after a Malm chest fell on him.

These three incidents, combined with three prior child deaths linked to other Ikea furniture models, have prompted Ikea to recall the Malm products, along with a lengthy list of other dressers. Customers can either opt for a refund for their furniture or request a free wall anchoring kit that will prevent the item from tipping over. Products purchased after 2002 are eligible for a full refund, and older models can be refunded for partial store credit.

The Malm products included in the product recall are Malm 3,4,5 and 6 dressers and chests. The full list of additional recalled items can be found here.

“If you have one of these products in your home, please act immediately to return it or securely anchor it to the wall, especially if you have young children,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
