Adding to the devastation caused by Takata airbags, the major American car manufacturer GM has now announced that they will be recalling nearly 5.9 million vehicles which features this defective product. According to recent reports, GM initially asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to avoid declaring a recall, a petition which was promptly denied by the federal agency. This is the fourth such petition by GM since 2016.
Recent estimates have placed the cost of this recall to GM at approximately 1.6 billion dollars. That being said, the ability to ensure that no lives are lost by these defective products is certainly far more priceless. The airbags in question have been known to deploy unexpectedly and project shards of debris at vehicle occupants, occasionally resulting in a fatality.
More information about the recall will be provided as it becomes available.
