Hesperia Driver Crashes After Falling Asleep at the Wheel

A driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a light pole in Hesperia early Thursday morning. The accident occurred around 12:23 a.m. at the intersection of Cottonwood Avenue and Cromdale Street.

The driver, a 28-year-old woman, was driving a Chevrolet Tahoe north on Cottonwood Avenue, when she reportedly fell asleep and drove up the curb and into the light pole. She was taken to a local hospital for unspecified injuries.

Police are looking into the accident, but they do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved.

Dangers of Drowsy Driving

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety estimates that drowsy driving contributes to 328,000 crashes every year. Of those, roughly 109,000 result in injuries and 6,400 are fatal. It is hard to pin down the exact impact of drowsy driving, as it is likely and underreported occurrence. But data from a Centers for Disease Control survey showed 4.2% of people reported falling asleep at the wheel at least once in the past 30 days from when they were surveyed. Moreover, The Gallup Organization estimated from survey data in 2002 that 7.5 million drivers had nodded off behind the wheel in the past 30 days.
