Inattention Behind the Wheel Could Be Causing Many Accidents

If you’ve ever let your mind wander while you were driving, you aren’t alone: a new study shows a majority of drivers reported doing so, leading researchers to believe that inattention is likely causing many car accidents. Mind wandering is only made worse by other distractions behind the wheel, like mobile devices.

For the study, participants took part in a driving simulation, in which their brain patterns were monitored to determine when their attention drifted off. Participants did two 20-minute driving sessions for five consecutive days to simulate a daily commute to work on a highway.

According to the results, mind wandering was common among all drivers. However, they were only aware of it about 65% of the time. Researchers also found that the inattention put them in more danger, as they were less receptive to external stimuli.

Could Technology Help with Driver Inattention?

Researchers say further studies are needed to determine the true dangers of mind wandering behind the wheel. However, they also say technology could play an important role in reducing the dangers of inattention. Autonomous driving features, such as lane-keeping technology, can help reduce errors caused by inattention. Eventually, self-driving vehicles can also help address these issues.

“Inattention behind the wheel is undoubtedly a problem on roadways. Drivers should do their best to stay focused while driving. Eliminating distractions and ensuring you are not driving drowsy will help you focus on the road,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
