Motorcyclist Rescued on Mother’s Day in Morongo Valley

An injured motorcyclist was rescued after falling down an embankment on the Morongo Grade on Mother’s Day around 2:40 p.m. Authorities say the man was traveling westbound on Twentynine Palms Highway when he hit a rail a mile past the Riverside County Line. He was thrown down the embankment 300 to 400 feet.

When firefighters arrived, they found the injured motorcyclist unconscious and struggling to breathe. They stabilized him and drove him to the bottom of the grade. He was then airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center. The incident shut down all highway lanes in both directions as the helicopter landed.

The accident draws attention to the growing safety concerns for motorcyclists in the area. California motorcycle fatalities hit a decade low in 2010 but have since risen by more than 28%. The most common causes of motorcycle crashes are speeding, unsafe turning, and alcohol or drug impairment. With May being Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, many communities are working to help curb this rising problem. Last week, Perris police held a safety enforcement operation where 30 drivers were cited for safety violations.

“Far too many motorcyclists have lost their lives over the past five years. We’re glad communities are making efforts to combat the problem,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
