Johnson & Johnson Hit with Verdict in Asbestos Case

Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $25.7 million to a woman who allegedly developed mesothelioma from using the company’s baby powder. The award includes $21.7 million in compensatory damages and $4 million in punitive damages.

The plaintiff, 68-year-old Joanne Anderson, was diagnosed with mesothelioma—a cancer closely related to asbestos exposure. In her suit, Anderson named J&J, a unit of Imerys SA (J&J’s talc supplier), Cyprus Amax Minerals, a unit of Brenntag, Honeywell International, and other talc suppliers as defendants.

J&J Faces More Lawsuits Over Baby Powder

J&J continues to deny that its talc products contain asbestos or cause cancer. However, this verdict is the company’s second trial loss related to baby powder containing asbestos. In April, J&J and its talc supplier were ordered to pay $117 million to a man who claimed his mesothelioma was caused from asbestos in J&J Baby Powder. The company also faces roughly 6,000 cases over its baby powder’s role in women’s ovarian cancer.
