Less than 2 Years After NFL Concussion Settlement, Paid Claims Have Surpassed $500 Million

More than $500 million in claims under the NFL concussion settlement have been approved to pay out to injured players. This comes less than two years after the settlement was finalized—a surprise, as officials estimated it would likely take a decade for roughly $400 million to be paid out.

Attorneys for retired players involved in the settlement say the settlement will likely reach $1.4 billion. That is about half a billion more than the original estimate.

In the less than two years following the settlement, nearly 2,000 claims have been filed, and thousands more players have signed up to prequalify. As of the end of July, more than 7,000 medical appointments had been set to assess neurological baselines of retired players.

The NFL concussion settlement is intended to provide compensation to players who develop neurological problems, including Lou Gehrig’s disease and dementia, which are believed to be caused by the concussions they suffered during their careers.

“This is great news for retired players who have suffered brain injuries during their years of playing for the NFL,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
