Los Angeles Sheriffs Launch Gun Safety Campaign

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department recently launched a campaign focused on gun safety, with an emphasis on keeping guns out of the hands of children. The campaign comprised public service announcements on the LASD’s social media accounts, which are followed by nearly eight million people.

The campaign is an important one, in light of the statistics on accidental gun deaths. According to a 2016 CDC study, 3,000 children were unintentionally shot in incidents related to improperly stored guns. Of those, 127 died from their injuries. These injuries and deaths occur all over the country. Sadly, most could have been prevented if the guns had been secured properly.

If you are a Low Desert or High Desert resident, you may not follow the LASD on social media, but their message is important for everyone to hear. According to the news conference held by LASD’s Sheriff Jim McDonnell, 4.6 million children in the U.S. live in households with unsecured weapons. The LASD’s message is easy to remember and vitally important: “If they’re not secure, they’re not safe.”

“Accidental gun deaths are preventable tragedies. It is every gun owner’s responsibility to keep their weapons out of the hands of children,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
