MMA Fighter’s Son Dies in Drunk Driving Crash

A drunk driving crash took the life of an MMA fighter’s 15-month-old son this month in Hawthorne. The driver, 72-year-old Donna Marie Higgins, was driving an SUV when she struck Liam Mikael Kowal, MMA fighter Marcus Kowal’s son. The child was being pushed in a stroller by his 15-year-old aunt. Higgins attempted to flee but was stopped and held by witnesses until police arrived.

Kowal was not breathing when authorities arrived and was taken to the hospital. He was declared brain dead on Sunday and taken off life support on Tuesday. His parents say his organs will be donated to help other children. His aunt is in stable condition.

Higgins was arrested for felony drunk driving but was released after posting bail. She was rearrested on Wednesday with a new charge of vehicular manslaughter.

“Our hearts are broken for Marcus Kowal and his family. Drunk driving has devastating consequences and oftentimes the most innocent among us are the victims,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
