Motorized Scooter Rider Convicted of DUI in Los Angeles

Bird scooters and other motorized scooters have become a popular mode of transportation in many of the nation’s cities. But they become a problem when people use them as transportation while under the influence. Los Angeles just successfully prosecuted its first motorized scooter DUI offender—a 28-year-old man who hit a pedestrian with an electric scooter while under the influence.

The scooter operator, Nicholas Kauffroath, was riding the Bird scooter on a West Los Angeles sidewalk on August 4, when he struck a 64-year-old pedestrian. Authorities found Kauffroath had a blood-alcohol level of .279, which is more than three times the legal limit. Bird’s rental agreement specifies that riders must not operate scooters while under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication.

Kauffroath was convicted of operating a motorized scooter while under the influence and hit-and-run. His sentence includes 36 months of probation, a $550 fine, a three-month DUI alcohol program, and a payment of restitution to the pedestrian.
