Navajo Nation Sues Wells Fargo for Fraud
Navajo Nation Sues Wells Fargo for Fraud

Wells Fargo is in hot water again, this time being accused of defrauding members of the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation has sued the bank for $50 million. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in New Mexico, claims that Wells Fargo employees used predatory and unlawful practices to defraud victims, many of whom do not speak English.

According to the lawsuit, Wells Fargo salespeople told Navajo consumers that in order to have their checks cashed, they had to sign up for special savings accounts—an outright lie. Employees opened up unnecessary accounts, set up debit or credit cards without consent, and collected fees for the services.

Salespeople Targeted the Elderly and Children

The lawsuit states that the bank’s representatives specifically targeted elderly Navajo consumers, a violation of the Elder Justice Act. It also alleges they targeted Navajo women who sold native crafts and other products at local events. They even set up accounts for minors by falsifying birth dates to bypass parental consent.

Wells Fargo has stated that the institution is taking steps to rectify the wrongs committed by its employees. The bank faces numerous other lawsuits regarding its fraudulent practices.

“What Wells Fargo employees have done to consumers in order to meet their sales quotas is despicable,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
