New E-Cigarette Lawsuit Points Finger at Battery Manufacturer

On January 15, an e-cigarette battery exploded in Erik Howell’s pocket as he left work. His pants caught fire, and he suffered serious burns to his legs and genitals. According to his attorney, Howell suffered significant nerve damage from the incident and is still recovering. The 26-year-old has now filed a lawsuit against LG Chem, the Korean company that manufactured the battery.

The lawsuit claims that poor design, defective manufacturing and other factors can cause the battery’s internal temperature to rise and trigger an explosion. LG Chem is one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers. Howell’s attorney is handling 15 other cases against the company over e-cigarette defects.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there were nearly 200 incidents of fires or explosions involving e-cigarettes between 2009 and 2016. About one-third of those resulted in serious injuries.

Howell’s lawsuit is among nine others filed across the state by plaintiffs who claim e-cigarettes or their batteries caused their injuries. Four of the cases, including Howell’s, name LG Chem as a defendant.

“These e-cigarette batteries have caused serious injury to many people. It is past time for these manufacturers to solve the problem,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
