Is the NHTSA Behind on Regulating?
Is the NHTSA Behind on Regulating?

Last week, a House panel on energy and commerce discussed whether the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is having trouble fulfilling all the responsibilities involved with ensuring auto safety. The Trump administration has lowered the budget for the agency this year, and has yet to nominate a permanent administrator.

Deputy administrator Heidi King told the panel the proposed budget does not reflect what the agency will need to succeed. In addition to regulating regular vehicles—which is a feat in itself, considering the recent uptick in traffic-related deaths—the NHTSA is also responsible for regulating the self-driving vehicles that are currently being tested on U.S. roadways. So far, the agency’s involvement in regulating the autonomous vehicle industry has been minimal.

Auto Recalls, Other NHTSA Programs Falling Behind

Then there is the issue of auto recalls. The Takata airbag recall is the largest auto recall in U.S. history. However, less than half of the vehicles affected have been repaired. The NHTSA is also behind on issuing several regulations mandated by Congress, including a safety measure to protect children in side impact crashes. The agency is also responsible for updating the New Car Assessment Program and vehicle-to-vehicle communication standards.

“There are several pressing issues the NHTSA needs to address this year. It is not the time to take away their resources,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
