Onglyza Lawsuits Over Heart Failure Side Effects on the Rise

The creators of diabetes drug Onglyza have been hit with several lawsuits over heart failure claims. Onglyza was created by AstraZeneca and Bristol Myers Squibb and was approved by the FDA in 2009. One lawsuit, recently filed by Rochelle Gibson, claims that Onglyza contributed to her mother’s death. Her mother, Lillie Gibson, suffered heart failure after taking the drug to treat her Type 2 diabetes. She was hospitalized twice, then died in 2013.

What is Onglyza?

Onglyza is an alternative to insulin treatment. It works by helping the pancreas create insulin and preventing the liver from making extra sugar. In addition to its cardiovascular risks, some studies have shown the drug can increase the risk of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.

Study Shows Increased Risk of Heart Failure

In 2013, a clinical trial found a potential link between Onglyza and increased risk of heart failure. The following year, the FDA did a side-effect review study of the drug. Then in 2016, the FDA ordered the manufacturers to add a warning of increased risk of heart failure.

“Consumers deserve to know the risks of the drugs they are taking. Concealing possible side effects can have dangerous—even fatal—consequences,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
