Police Use Social Media to Find Hit and Run Suspect

More than a month after a collision took the life of Yucca Valley resident Jerrod Austin Cary, police have arrested the hit and run suspect they believe struck the 32-year-old. Cheryl Dvoracek, 27, was identified as the driver of a 2007 Nissan Maxima that struck Cary on Avalon Avenue in Yucca Valley on Feb. 28 just after 2 a.m.

Cary was rushed to Hi-Desert Medical Center, where he died from his injuries an hour later. Witnesses identified the Maxima, which police found near the crash site. However, the car’s owner told officers that someone else had been using the car at the time of the crash. The investigation eventually led to Dvoracek as the hit and run suspect, but police were unable to locate her. She was apparently also wanted on drug and firearm charges.

Police posted Dvoracek’s photograph on Facebook for “Fugitive Friday” on March 25, asking the public for tips on her whereabouts. Dvoracek was found at a Yucca Valley home on March 31, then taken to the Morongo Basin Jail for felony hit and run. Inmate records also show Dvoracek is charged with transportation or sale of drugs, possession of drugs for sale and being a felon in the possession of a firearm.

“The power of Facebook and social media to disseminate news quickly is incredible,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group. “We’re glad to see justice served for the death of Jerrod Austin Cary.”
