In the third installment of our “Your Questions Answered” series, we’re tackling one of the most relevant topics for Americans across the country today – Uninsured and Under-insured Motorist Insurance. Although you may think that this type of coverage isn’t necessary, the information included here can help you make the best possible decision to protect you and your family. Read on to learn more!
Question: Why do I need UM/UIM?
Answer: UM/UIM insurance is how you protect yourself from Uninsured Motorist (UM) and Under-Insured Motorists (UIM). When you carry UM/UIM insurance, you are able to seek recovery for a car accident from your own insurance. This turns out to be the primary source of recovery in many personal injury claims.
In California, many drivers are uninsured or carry the state minimum coverage of $15,000. If you are involved in a car accident with a driver who carries the state minimum coverage, the maximum recovery you can realistically obtain from that driver is the $15,000 policy limits. However, if you carry $100,000 in UM/UIM insurance, you can seek $100,000 in total recovery. The additional $85,000 in funds would come from your own policy. With the rising cost of medical bills and the very low state minimum coverage requirement, UM/UIM coverage is a very important way to protect yourself and your family.
Walter Clark Legal Group recommends you carry at least $100,000 in UM/UIM coverage. This additional coverage is relatively inexpensive, particularly in light of how valuable it can be. If you have any questions about UM/UIM coverage, please do not hesitate to reach out to Walter Clark Legal Group for a free consultation.
