UCLA researchers have discovered a way to quickly diagnose a traumatic brain injury (TBI) without a CT scan. The researchers found that when brain cells called astrocytes were damaged from a blow or jolt to the head, proteins were released. Three specific proteins appeared in the patients’ blood as soon as one hour after the injury.

The Impact on Patients with Brain Injuries

This discovery is significant because it makes it possible to accurately diagnose even a minor brain injury, like a concussion. These injuries are often not visible on a CT scan. In the past, individuals with these injuries might not have taken the time to rest and recover. With the use of biomarkers, doctors can accurately diagnose patients and advise them of the proper steps to recovery.

Additionally, being able to diagnose and begin treating a concussion within an hour after the injury can make a significance difference in a patient’s recovery. Instead of a football player getting back onto the field too quickly, an accurate concussion diagnosis might help prevent repeated hits and promote rest and recovery.

Ina Wanner, associate neuroscientist at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, says her team is now working on making blood tests for the biomarkers. Soon, she hopes to be able to test patients with a skin pin prick. The test should be able to measure the markers in blood within 10-20 minutes.

“This is an important new discovery that has the potential to help a lot of people. We commend the researchers for making the diagnosis of these devastating brain injuries a priority,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
