Safety App Prevents Distracted Driving
Safety App Prevents Distracted Driving

A new app to help prevent distracted driving accidents is now available in the Google Play Store. The Surpass app is a safety tool that blocks incoming transmissions while the user is driving. The app automatically turns on the safety screen when your car is in motion, blocking all notifications and automatically replying to text messages to let people know you are driving.

Surpass gives the driver three choices while driving: Music Mode, Navigation and Phone Allow List. These options allow the driver to use their smartphone’s default navigation program or play music while driving. The driver can also make and receive emergency calls to a preset list of important contacts.

Distracted Driving on the Rise

The creator of the app, Mark Stewart, says he developed the program to help reduce the temptation for distracted driving. The need is clear: in 2014, 16% of all police-reported traffic accidents involved a distracted driver. That year, 3,179 people were killed and 431,000 were injured in distracted driving crashes.

Teens Most at Risk for Distracted Driving

A parental control update to the app will soon be available. This will allow parents to keep teens’ smartphones in driving mode while they are behind the wheel. Considering that distraction accounts for 10% of fatal accidents involving drivers ages 15-19, the need for parental control of smartphones for teen drivers is apparent.

Learn more about the app on the Surpass website, or download it in the Google Play store.

“These types of apps are crucial in our era of nonstop communication. Please take the initiative to download a driving app to reduce your own temptation to drive distracted,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
