Would Seat Belt Have Saved Driver Ejected in Rollover Crash?

A driver was killed in a rollover crash in Ludlow early Labor Day morning. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials say 25-year-old Cody Brown of Cypress was driving a 2012 Ford Fusion on I-40 in the No. 1 lane when he veered left across the shoulder and onto the dirt embankment. The vehicle overturned and came to a rest on its roof.

Brown was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. They suffered minor injuries and were able to exit the vehicle on their own.

The CHP is still investigating the rollover crash, but alcohol and drugs are not suspected factors. However, authorities say Brown was not wearing a seatbelt when the crash occurred.

Seat belts are the No. 1 way to prevent being ejected from a vehicle during a crash. People who do not wear a seat belt are 30 times more likely to be ejected during a crash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Of people who are ejected from vehicles, more than 3 out of 4 die from their injuries.

“The victim’s family and friends are in our prayers. Please wear your seat belt every time you get into a vehicle. You can’t predict when these crashes are going to happen, so it’s always best to be prepared for the worst,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
