States Receive Funding for Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety

In an effort to improve commercial motor vehicle safety, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) awarded more than $70 million in grants to various entities. The grants will help officials move forward with efforts to prevent commercial vehicle crashes.

The FMCSA grants cover several areas of commercial motor vehicle safety (CMV). The majority of the funds are High Priority (HP) grants, which will go toward enhancing states’ CMV safety efforts. Roughly $31 million are Commercial Driver’s License Program Implementation grants. These help states improve the national commercial driver’s license program. Another $1 million will provide funding to nine education institutions dedicated to training veterans for jobs as commercial drivers.

The funds will help states improve the safety technology of commercial vehicles, as well as improve training and regulatory compliance. Overall, the goal of these programs is to save lives by reducing commercial vehicle crashes.
