Super Bowl Sunday: A Deadly Day for DUIs
Super Bowl Sunday: A Deadly Day for DUIs

Super Bowl Sunday is a great opportunity for kicking back with family and friends to watch the big game. Unfortunately, it is also one of the worst days for drunk driving crashes. In fact, your chance of being involved in a drunk driving crash can increase as much as double that of an ordinary Sunday this time of year.

A study by the Auto Club of Southern California showed a 77% increase in alcohol-related crashes causing injury or death on Super Bowl Sunday. The study looked at data from 2009-2013, from 5 p.m. Sunday through 4 a.m. the following Monday. In all, there were 294 crashes causing death or injury in California on Super Bowl Sundays, compared with 166 other Sundays.

Don’t Drink and Drive on Game Day

What can you do to keep yourself and loved ones safe? It’s simple: don’t drink and drive, and don’t allow your friends and family to drink and drive. If you’re going to a party where you know you will be drinking, make sure you have a designated driver, or call a taxi or ride-sharing service like Uber. If you notice a friend who has been drinking at the party heading out the door with their keys, stop them and help them find another way home.

“We urge everyone to make smart choices this Super Bowl Sunday. Have a fun day and stay safe,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
