Did Weather Contribute to I-15 Rollover Crashes?

Several rollover crashes, including one fatal accident, occurred on I-15 in a 15-hour period during last month’s rain and snow storms. The first crash happened just after 10 a.m. on northbound I-15 near mile marker 157 in Nipton. California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials responded to the call and found an unresponsive person in a white Mercedes SUV that had rolled over on the right shoulder. The victim died at the scene.

The second rollover crash occurred at 10:24 a.m. on northbound I-15 about 15 miles north of the first crash. A silver sedan carrying four people rolled over for unknown reasons. The vehicle then came to rest on its wheels and no one reported injuries.

A tan SUV rolled over on southbound I-15 near Nipton Road just before 11 a.m. The overturned vehicle blocked the slow lane and caused some traffic delays.

Weather Likely a Factor Rollover Crashes

Rain and snow were reported in the area through Mountain Pass that day, likely contributing to the rollover crashes. According to the Auto Insurance Center, auto accidents are the deadliest weather hazards in the U.S. Weather-related crashes account for 7,000 deaths every year.
