Woman Sues Invokana for Kidney Injury

A Tennessee woman has filed a personal injury lawsuit against Janssen Pharmaceuticals for a kidney injury she suffered after taking the drug Invokana. Invokana is a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2 inhibitor) used to treat type 2 diabetes.

According to the lawsuit, the drug caused the woman serious side effects, including a kidney injury. The woman began taking Invokana in June 2015 to treat her diabetes. She suffered the kidney injury in February 2016, which led to complications she continues to live with.

The personal injury lawsuit claims the plaintiff suffered physical and emotional distress, as well as economic loss from medical expenses. She also claims Janssen failed to adequately warn patients and the medical community about the drug’s serious side effects.

After investigating numerous reports of side effects from Invokana in May of 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) required Janssen to add warnings to the drug’s label. The warning label now alerts patients of the drug’s side effects, including diabetic ketoacidosis.

“Drug companies bear the responsibility of warning consumers of their drugs’ side effects. Patients deserve to make an informed decision before taking any medication,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
