This Year’s Coachella Valley Pedestrian Deaths Nearing 2017 Number

The Coachella Valley is just one pedestrian fatality away from reaching the number of pedestrian deaths that occurred in all of 2017. On August 30, an Indio pedestrian was fatally struck at Avenue 48 and Madison Street—the 12th fatal pedestrian crash of the year for the Coachella Valley. Last year, 13 people were killed in pedestrian accidents in the valley.

If pedestrian deaths surpass 13 this year, that will make 2018 the third deadliest year for pedestrians this decade. The worst year by far for pedestrians the the Coachella Valley was 2016, when 29 pedestrians were killed. The deadly year prompted several safety initiatives by law enforcement and traffic agencies.

For the most part, drivers cooperated in the aftermath of fatal pedestrian crashes this year. However, three of the crashes were hit-and-runs, and only one suspect has been arrested in connection with a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run.

“Pedestrian and drivers alike must prioritize the safety of pedestrians. Stay alert and eliminate distractions while behind the wheel and while crossing the street,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
