High-Speed Chase Suspect Shot and Killed in La Quinta

The suspect who led police on a high-speed chase in Palm Desert Thursday was shot and killed. Jurupa Valley Police responded to a carjacking at Mission Boulevard and Crestmore Road around 3:50 p.m., where two female victims said they had been threatened by a suspect with a gun. They were out of the vehicle and uninjured with officers arrived. The suspect took off on I-10 through San Bernardino and then through Riverside County.

Police laid a pike strip down in La Quinta, which punctured all four of the vehicle’s tires as the suspect drove over it. He continued driving and eventually came to a stop on Jefferson Street south of Avenue 52. The suspect remained in the vehicle and refused to surrender to Riverside County SWAT. At around 7 p.m., he finally exited the vehicle but continued to refuse officers’ commands. Finally, shots were fired and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The high-speed chase covered 90 miles and passed through several highly populated areas, including La Quinta’s El Paseo shopping district. Once the vehicle was stopped, Jefferson Street was shut down south of Avenue 52 in both directions until 6:30 a.m. Friday. No one else was reportedly injured in the incident.
