A 6-year-old boy was injured at a bus stop Monday afternoon in Victorville. The incident occurred on Cobalt Road near Begonia Road at 2:15 p.m., right after the boy was dropped off by a Victor Elementary School bus.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the bus driver had escorted the child across the street, gotten back onto the bus, and was preparing to take off when the boy suddenly darted across the street. The child was then struck by a Honda Accord heading north on Cobalt Road. The vehicle was going about 15 mph at the time of the crash.
According to witnesses, the boy ran out in front of the car, leaving no time for the driver to stop for him. The child was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center for his injuries, including lacerations to his elbow and knee.
NHTSA Issues Bus Stop Safety Tips
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released a video message addressing the accidents occurring near schools and bus stops, and imploring drivers to slow down for the safety of children.
NHTSA Deputy Administrator Heidi King issued the statement, reminding drivers that passing a school bus with its lights flashing and stop sign extended is illegal in all 50 states. She also urged drivers to visit the NHTSA website for driver safety tips. The agency’s website offers several tips for motorists regarding school zones and bus stops, including:
- Be alert and drive slow in and near school zones.
- Be on the lookout for children near bus stops.
- Obey school bus laws, and pay attention to flashing lights indicating that a bus is going to stop.
