In what could be a sign of huge trouble for the Roundup legal defense team, a California jury has just awarded over $2 billion to Alberto and Alva Pillod following a jury’s decision that the controversial weed killer was responsible for their cancer. This follows a $39 million payout to Dwayne Johnson, who filed a lawsuit against Monsanto following his terminal cancer diagnosis.
Johnson was a pest manager for a county school system, who applied Roundup weed killer to the grounds 20-30 times per year. His lawsuit claims that Monsanto failed to warn customers of the dangers of the active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate. Moreover, Johnson contends that Roundup products contributed to his cancer.
CNN reports that there are more than 800 people suing Monsanto. The lawsuits make similar claims to Johnson’s—that the company failed to warn consumers of the risk of cancer associated with Roundup products.
Does Roundup Cause Cancer?
Monsanto denies the allegations that its weedkiller, which came onto the scene in the 1970s, causes cancer. The World Health Organization categorizes glyphosate as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” A long-term study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found there was no link between the chemical and “any solid tumors or lymphoid malignancies overall.” However, the study did point to an increased risk of acute myeloid leukemia among the group that had the most exposure to the chemical. The association was not high enough to be statistically significant.
“Our thoughts are with Mr. Johnson and his attorneys as they begin this trial,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
