Can You Remove Chromium-6 from Your Drinking Water?

A national report has found unsafe levels of chromium-6 in tap water across the country. Chromium-6, the chemical featured in the movie “Erin Brockovich,” is a carcinogenic chemical. The report, published by the Environmental Working Group, shows higher than recommended levels in two-thirds of Americans’ drinking water.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has never set a limit for safe levels of chromium-6 in drinking water. But in 2014, California became the first state to establish a limit for the chemical, capping it at 10 parts per billion. Even with the regulations, California remains one of three states with the highest averages of chromium-6, according to the report.

Studies have shown that breathing in chromium-6 particles can cause lung cancer. A study conducted by the National Toxicology Program also showed that drinking water with chromium-6 caused cancer in lab rats.

If you are concerned about chromium-6 in your tap water, you can filter it out with certain filtration systems, like an ion exchange water treatment unit.

“It is an atrocity that a majority of Americans are exposed to harmful levels of this chemical in their drinking water,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
