FDA Approves Blood Test for Brain Injuries

Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a blood test that quickly detect concussions and brain injuries in patients. The Branyan Brain Trauma Indicator (BBTI) is a breakthrough discovery that may help in early detection of traumatic brain injuries (TBI).

The blood test works by measuring the blood for two brain-specific protein markers. These proteins appear in the blood at higher levels after a person has suffered a TBI.

While the test is a helpful tool for detecting potential brain injuries, it is not meant to diagnose patients with a concussion or TBI. Instead, it is a tool that will help medical personnel quickly determine whether a patient needs to seek a higher level of medical treatment.

“There were roughly 2.8 million emergency room visits related to traumatic brain injuries in 2013, according to the CDC. This blood test will be a great help for determining whether a patient may need further tests and treatment for TBI,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
