High Speed Collision Kills 2 Victorville Children
High Speed Collision Kills 2 Victorville Children

Two children died in a high speed collision on Mojave Drive in Victorville Saturday night. The fatal accident occurred just after 8:30 p.m. According to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s officials, A Hyundai Elantra carrying five passengers was traveling north on Amethyst Road when the driver turned left onto Mojave Drive. The Hyundai drove directly in the path of an oncoming Ford Taurus. The Ford then T-boned the Hyundai at roughly 55 mph.

The victims were 12-year-old Pedro Basua Jr. and his 10-year-old sister Teresa Basua. Authorities pronounced the two children dead at the scene. The driver and front seat passenger, the victims’ parents, were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Rescue workers also pulled an 11-year-old boy from the Hyundai and airlifted him to a trauma center in critical condition.

Two teenagers in the Ford sustained minor injuries. They received treatment at a local hospital. A third occupant left the scene without injury.

Did Dangerous Roadway Contribute to Deadly High Speed Collision?

Residents have expressed concern over the area where the high speed collision occurred. One resident says her parents died in an accident just down the street from the crash site. Another commented that the speed limit of 60 mph on Mojave Drive is dangerous, considering the sparse traffic signals. It can also be difficult to gauge the speed of oncoming vehicles, particularly at night. As a result, determining when to make a turn onto the road can be tricky.

“Our hearts go out to the family as they deal with this tragedy. We encourage the city to examine this and other questionable roadways to determine whether changes should be made in the interest of public safety,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
