The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a new crash test program for vehicles that emphasizes the safety of front seat passengers. An existing test, the driver’s side overlap test, already helps protect drivers. The IIHS has developed the new test to ensure manufacturers prioritize the safety of front seat passengers as well. The test was created due to some vehicle manufacturers neglecting front passenger crash protection.
Developing a Passenger Side Crash Test
In the driver’s side test, the vehicle is driven into a barrier at 40 mph, with just 25% of the front end overlapping the barrier on the driver’s side. The passenger side test is almost identical, except that the vehicle overlaps the barrier on the passenger side instead. The test also includes a passenger dummy.
In the beginning, IIHS engineers focused on driver-side protection. This made sense, as every vehicle has a driver, whereas it may or may not have a passenger. Unfortunately, this allowed some automakers to be less stringent on passenger safety. However, this new focus will push automakers to boost the safety of vehicles for passengers.
“The implementation of this new crash test should help improve auto safety for front side passengers,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
