Californians made the decision Tuesday to legalize recreational marijuana throughout the state, making it the fifth state in the U.S. to do so. As of Wednesday at 12:01 a.m., adults over the age of 21 were officially allowed to use marijuana within their residence or private business. They can also grow six marijuana plants in their homes.
Under the new law, adults can only possess up to 28.5 grams of marijuana or eight grams of concentrated marijuana products. While it is now legal to use marijuana recreationally, driving under the influence of marijuana is still against the law. It is also unlawful to smoke in public.
According to California’s legislative analyst, the legalization of recreational marijuana could bring in an additional $1 billion a year in tax revenue.
Driving under the influence of marijuana remains a public safety issue in California. In 2015, marijuana was involved in 21% of fatal crashes in California, up 3% from the previous year.
“The people of California have made their voices heard in the passing of Prop 64. We hope that those who decide to use marijuana recreationally will follow the laws and refrain from driving while under the influence, which can have deadly consequences,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
