A rise in fatal Victor Valley collisions has California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials concerned about the safety of local drivers. In the first two months of 2016, 10 fatalities were reported, as opposed to four in the first two months of 2015.
CHP officials said the number of traffic collisions was similar for both years. The major difference is the number of fatalities resulting from those collisions, and the increase in DUIs related to those crashes.
To combat the increase in fatal Victor Valley collisions, the CHP and the Sheriff’s Department are taking various measures to encourage safe driving. Enforcement periods for distracted and/or drunk driving allow police to crack down on unsafe driving practices. These enforcement periods are an opportunity to stop dangerous drivers and also to send a message that distracted or drunk driving will not be tolerated.
Education is also a key factor in combating the problem of fatal collisions. The Hesperia Sheriff’s Station along with the CHP recently put on an event at Hesperia High School called “Every 15 Minutes,” which brought the consequences of drinking and driving to life for students.
You can also be a part of the effort to reduce fatal collisions in your area. If you witness a crash or someone driving unsafely, please contact your local sheriff’s station or the CHP.
