Was Passport Information Stolen in Equifax Breach?

As more information about the Equifax breach becomes available, the effects of this huge data breach continue to worsen. The latest development shows that the hackers may have obtained images of customers’ passports, driver’s licenses and other personal documents.

According to Equifax, the hackers accessed images of 38,000 driver’s licenses, 12,000 Social Security cards, 3,200 passports and 3,000 other documents. The documents were uploaded by customers to Equifax’s online dispute portal in order to challenge information on their credit reports.

The concern of course includes the possibility of identity theft, but security experts say passport theft also poses a national security risk. In fact, some experts consider passport theft to be a terrorism threat.

Consumers have filed more than 20,000 complaints about the Equifax data breach to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB).

“The theft of this personal information puts thousands of consumers at risk,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
