In 2017, there were 55 fatal collisions in Riverside County involving victims between the ages of 16 and 25. And this year’s traffic fatalities involving young drivers are already nearing that of last year.
Why is the road so deadly for young drivers? The California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) reports that drivers in the 16-25 age range have a collision risk four times that of an experienced driver. The inexperience of young drivers, paired with dangerous habits like texting and driving, can lead to tragedy.
CHP Offers Youth Driving Programs
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is working to equip young drivers and their parents with education and safety training. The CHP offers free classes with information for parents and teens on safe driving. The classes give teens an honest look at the consequences of dangerous driving, and tips on how to stay safe behind the wheel. Officers suggest that parents take their teens out to practice driving for more than just the minimum amount of hours required for their permit. Parents are also urged to be mindful of their own driving practices to set a good example for their children.
