Zantac Recalled After FDA Report
Zantac Recalled After FDA Report

This October, the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi announced that they were initiating a voluntary recall of Zantac, a popular heartburn drug used by millions of consumers around the world. The recall occurred as a result of numerous studies, including research undertaken by the FDA, which discovered that a chemical found inside of Zantac is linked to cancer growth. According to recent research, ranitidine may increase your chances of developing:

• Bladder cancer.

• Colon/Rectal cancer.

• Stomach cancer.

• Intestinal cancer.

• Esophageal cancer.

• Kidney cancer.

• Pancreatic cancer.

• Liver cancer.

Zantac is the branded name of a drug known as a ranitidine Although Zantac has been recalled due to the presence of ranitidine, the drug can also be found in a variety of other related medications. Because of this, a number of other pharmaceutical companies, including Apotex Corp. and Sandoz, Inc., have also issued voluntary recalls on ranitidine-based drugs. Additionally, CVS and Walgreens have pulled Zantac and other ranitidine-based drugs from their shelves.

Understanding a Voluntary Recall

Unlike a mandatory recall, customers can still continue to use Zantac if they so choose. Medical professionals have also been quick to point out that this specific recall does not imply that ALL heartburn drugs are dangerous to consumers. In fact, individuals who have been using Zantac are encouraged to reach out to their doctor to explore other possible options they should consider to replace Zantac.

It is also important to note that the FDA had announced that it is continuing to assess whether or not levels of ranitidine found in prescriptions is actually harmful to patients. This is being done on a brand-by-brand basis in collaboration with the prescription drug manufacturers themselves. If the manufacturer detects levels of ranitidine above a certain threshold, they are required to report this information to the FDA.
