By now, you have likely heard about the Equifax data breach, in which 143 million people had their personal information leaked. But do you know what you can do about it? Here are some practical steps you can take to respond to the breach.
What to do about the Equifax breach:
- Find out whether your information was leaked. Equifax has set up a website where you can check whether you were affected by the breach. There you can also sign up for a year of their credit monitoring program for free.
- Check your accounts for any suspicious activity. Even if you enroll today in Equifax’s credit monitoring program, hackers might have gotten your information months ago when the breach occurred. Diligently check all your accounts to ensure there are no suspicious charges.
- If you find suspicious activity or you are worried about your information being compromised, sign up for a credit freeze. Requesting a credit freeze from a credit reporting company restricts anyone from accessing your credit report. New creditors will not be able to access your information. This will stop someone from trying to fraudulently open an account in your name. Keep in mind that these freezes restrict everyone from accessing your credit report, so you will need to remove the freeze if someone has a legitimate need to access it, such as a loan officer or potential employer.
- Set up fraud alerts for extra protection. If you don’t want to set up a full-on credit freeze, you can request fraud alerts instead. This will require creditors to verify your identity before they can access your credit report.
“It is extremely worrying that a reputable company responsible for millions of people’s information was subject to a security breach of this magnitude,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
