Coachella Music Festival Postponed

In what many are considering a tactical move to thwart the ongoing spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), the organizers of the world-renowned Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival have announced that this year’s edition has been postponed until October. The festival organizers, Goldenvoice, announced in a statement on Tuesday that the decision to postpone the festival was influenced heavily by local health authorities and Riverside County officials.

Assessing the Impact

While postponing Coachella will certainly come as a shock to many, this delay follows a series of other noteworthy cancellations across the country, including the popular SXSW Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Closer to home, the world-renowned BNP Paribas tennis tournament has also been canceled due to fears of coronavirus.

If any silver lining does exist, it could be the fact that the Coachella organizers have already fixed a date for the festival later in the year. The devastation caused by canceling SXSW – a third of the festival’s staff were laid off – will not be as likely to happen here.

Moving Forward With Coronavirus

Whether or not coronavirus because the “new norm” for Americans has yet to be seen. That being said, it is certainly fair to say that administrators, business owners, and cultural figures are all working diligently to try and eliminate the threat of this virus before it becomes even more daunting in the future.
