Doctors Warn Against Marijuana Use by Pregnant Women

Doctors do not advise pregnant women to use cannabis as a treatment for morning sickness. Unfortunately, this isn’t stopping cannabis dispensaries from recommending marijuana to pregnant women.

In a study study conducted on 400 randomly selected dispensaries in Colorado, researchers called the dispensaries posing as pregnant women with morning sickness. Overall, 69% of dispensaries recommended cannabis for nausea relief in pregnant women. Of the medical marijuana dispensaries that received calls, 83% recommended marijuana to pregnant women.

Marijuana Could be Dangerous for Fetuses

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cautions that health effects on fetuses could include low birth weight and developmental problems. Human studies on the effects of THC on fetuses have not been done. However, in animal studies, THC (the active ingredient in marijuana) has been shown to cross the placenta. Researchers have suggested that this can cause defects in the offspring.

Women who experience morning sickness can find relief from conventional medications—usually vitamin B6 and doxylamine. This treatment method has undergone many formal studies and has not been found to be harmful to the fetus. There are also other safe medications a doctor can prescribe if that treatment does not work.

“With recreational marijuana now legal in our state, it is important for pregnant women to continue to follow the advice of their doctors regarding the use of this drug,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
