By now, you have most likely heard about Facebook’s possible misuse of users’ data. Activists have called for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate whether Facebook violated a 2011 consent decree—which was created following an earlier investigation into Facebook’s privacy practices. The FTC has stated that it is now investigating Facebook.

The investigation arose after a data analytics firm, Cambridge Analytica, purchased personal data from a researcher who gathered it through a Facebook app. In the app, users answered questions to a personality test. The app gathered data about the users and their friends, then sold the data to Cambridge Analytica.

Lawsuits against Facebook are now mounting over the privacy concern. Cook County, Illinois is suing both Facebook and Cambridge Analytica, claiming the companies both violated fraud law. According to the lawsuit, Facebook claimed to have strict protocols and limitations on data gathering, while it knowingly allowed app developers to mine data. Another lawsuit is being brought by a Facebook user as a class action, claiming the company violated user privacy.

“These potential privacy violations should be cause for concern for every user,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
