Law Day 2018 Dedicated to Separation of Powers
Law Day 2018 Dedicated to Separation of Powers

Tuesday, May 1, marks the 60th annual Law Day in the U.S. Law Day was established by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1958, to recognize the nation’s commitment to the rule of law. Then in 1961, Congress officially designated May 1 as Law Day.

This year’s theme for Law Day is Separation of Powers: Framework for Freedom. On this day, we reflect on the fundamental role the separation of powers plays in preserving liberty and protecting our rights. The U.S. Constitution designates three separate branches of government: the legislative, executive, and judicial powers. Each branch serves as a check on the power of the others, ensuring that no one entity has too much control.

Concerning this year’s Law Day theme, Janet DiFiore, Chief Judge for the State of New York, said, “This ingenious ‘framework for freedom’ is not self-executing or self-sustaining. It requires every one of us who has committed our professional lives to the law to be vigilant in defending judicial independence and to work earnestly to promote fair and effective justice institutions that are valued by the public.”

Our firm is dedicated to upholding the law. We appreciate the importance of separation of powers, and are proud to be promoters of public justice—today and everyday.
