Look Both Ways Campaign Expanding to High Desert

Caltrans is spreading its Look Both Ways campaign to encompass the Coachella Valley, High Desert and Inland Empire areas. The goal of the campaign is to increase pedestrian safety and reduce pedestrian injuries and fatalities.

Fatal pedestrian accidents have been on the rise over the past two years in the Coachella Valley. To help combat the problem, Caltrans has put up seven billboards along I-10 urging drivers to watch out for pedestrians. With the expansion of the program, billboards will also go up in the Inland Empire and High Desert.

What’s Causing the Increase in Pedestrian Fatalities?

According to Caltrans, increased traffic due to the area’s growing population might be playing a role in the issue. Of course, distracted driving is also likely contributing to the rise in pedestrian fatalities.

Multiple organizations contributed to the creation of the Look Both Ways campaign. Palm Springs mayor Robert Moon, the Coachella Valley Association of Governments, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and Palm Springs police chief Bryan Reyes were some of those involved.
