New Data Sheds Light on Vehicle Technology
New Data Sheds Light on Vehicle Technology

According to the most recent statistics, the market for partially autonomous vehicles is expected to reach 36 billion dollars by the year 2025. Although fully autonomous vehicles are still considered a point of intense interest and attention amongst developers and consumers alike, the market is substantially smaller, with a projected 6 billion dollar market size. While it is undeniable that this next-generation technology is fundamentally shifting the nature of the driving experience, the impact of “progress” must also be weighed by the reaction of consumers to this driving technology.

A new study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found that drivers rely too heavily on vehicle technology. According to the study, 80% of drivers with blind spot monitoring in their vehicles were not aware that their vehicle’s system only detects vehicles traveling at certain speeds, and may not detect pedestrians or bicyclists. This over-reliance on the vehicle’s safety systems can cause drivers to forego basic safety measures, such as checking blind spots before changing lanes. In fact, 25% of the drivers surveyed who use advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) said they rely solely on the systems and do not feel the need to perform visual checks.

Car Accidents and Automotive Technology

The study also revealed that about one-quarter of drivers with forward collision monitoring or lane departure warning systems said they were comfortable with engaging in other tasks while driving. This is very concerning, as these systems do not eliminate the need for drivers to maintain focus on the road.

“Vehicle technology systems have the potential to help prevent thousands of crashes and save lives, but drivers must be clear about their capabilities and limitations,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
