Police are searching for a driver who might have witnessed a fatal crash in Coachella Saturday morning. The crash occurred just after 6 a.m. on Highway 86 at Dillon Road. A Nissan Maxima was traveling north on the highway when it drifted to the right and rolled down an embankment.
Authorities identified the victim of the fatal accident as 22-year-old Alezia Carmona of El Centro. A second person was seriously injured in the crash.
A surveillance photo released by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) shows a Pontiac Aztek at the scene. The vehicle was not involved in the accident, but police believe the driver may have witnessed the crash. Investigators say the Pontiac driver stopped briefly when the Maxima passed along the right shoulder, but then continued onto northbound Highway 86.
The CHP is looking for the driver of the Pontiac, and is asking for anyone with information on the crash to call (760) 772-5300.
“Our condolences go out to the crash victim’s family. If you witness an accident, please call the police and remain at the scene to give a statement,” said Attorney Walter Clark, founder of Walter Clark Legal Group.
